Market and TrendsFirst time homebuyers continue to fuel the housing market rebound, accounting for nearly 50 percent of the home sales in the first seven months of 2009. These buyers were mostly between the ages of 25 and 45. In North Carolina October posted the fifth consecutive month of improvement in home sales, the longest period in more than five years.In North Carolina, October home sales surged 10.1 percent due to many first time homebuyers rushing to close before the first time home buyer tax credit was initially slated to end. Now the tax credit has been extended through April 30, 2010. Buyers must have a property under contract by April 30th. In the South, existing home sales surged 14.4 percent in October and were 28.8 percent higher than October 2008. The median price in the South was $151,000, down 6.3 percent from a year ago. Interest rates are still low and there are some special programs out there right now with low down payments. We have seen rates on home mortgages here in the area as low as 4 7/8’s in the last week.
