Community and County InformationThe county has offered tax breaks to both Borg-Warner and WilsonArt. WilsonArt is spending $1.7 million to create 28 new jobs and Borg-Warner plans a major $12.5 million upgrade. The county commissioners have offered WilsonArt a $3,861 per year reduction in taxes for seven years and they have offered Borg-Warner a reduction of $43,463 per year for five years. We are hopeful this will help the local job market and show some support for these companies to continue their operations in Henderson County. The outdoor shooting range at the Justice Academy in Edneyville is still one of the hottest topics currently on going within the community. Many residents have been working very deligently to have the proposed outdoor firing range built as an indoor facility or not built at all. It appears from recent headlines and information within the community that the Justice Academy plans to move forward with the construction as they are very afraid of loosing their funding if the project is not started. Recent quotes by the director of the Justice Academy in the Times News show the cost to build the outdoor range at $1.9 million, which has already been allocated by the state. To construct the facility indoors the director reports would cost another $3.8 million and has told county commissioners and the citizens that this extra money would have to come from the county or other sources. It appears that she will plan to break ground in February or March on the outdoor range if something does not change. We are very hopeful that a way will be found for this facility to be built indoors or that it will be abandoned all together at this location. I think many citizens that live in the Edneyville area are still unaware to some degree of this outdoor range proposal and what detriment could be caused by the noise and safety issues associated with it at the proposed location. From a company stand point, we have had to put together a disclaimer which we will begin using and will require anyone that purchases property near the Justice Academy to review and sign prior to purchasing the property which explains the possibility of this outdoor firing range being constructed. There is an ordinance change being proposed by the county right now that could require a minimum of 60% of the lots in rural subdivisions to have wells drilled and tested prior to that development being approved by the county. Some on the environmental committee want this to be 100% and for it to include the septic systems as well. These folks are also pushing for a ban on package treatment facilities in the county. We will have to see where all this leads. Terry Lyda, retiring county tax collector has reported that 67.74% of residents have paid their property tax and that 78.25% of the vehicle taxes have been paid thus far. There has been about $44 million collected and approximately $20 million still outstanding. |
